Monday Pete had a day riding my fabulous bike around town. (It works, it has a comfortable seat, but keeping it in just one of the seven gears can be a challenge.) He and Bruce had plans to visit an English pub his last night with us. He managed to check out two of them along the way, The Eagle (famous for Watson and Crick's attendance and WWII Americans burning messages into the ceiling with lighters and candles). He also stopped by another one in our neighborhood which did not impress. After a great deal of electronic research, we found a pub called the Live and Let Live that was the Cambridge favorite of CAMRA, a group working to preserve our ability to buy real ales at pubs (not just the corporate stuff). This one is associated with Adnan's. Not sure what that means... Pete was envious of Bruce's bangers and mash, but seemed to enjoy his selection as well.
The next morning we managed to squeeze in tea at Grantchester Orchard, apparently famous for it's patronage by the likes of Virginia Woolf, Bertrand Russell, and poet Rupert Brooke who is likened to Marilyn Monroe and James Dean for his short life and great popularity.
It was great having Pete around, he had amazing patience with the kids as usual. Olivia used him to memorize a xmas song to the rhythm and hand motions of Cee Cee Oh Playmate (that's how we sing it), several times a day. Somehow he keeps all three entertained whether in the pool or on the walk to school, and survives the excitement he brings out in them. He drinks a good ale with Bruce, while educating us about financial stuff, and even had one political conversation with me that didn't result in yelling. Major progress. We look forward to seeing him and Allison soon, back in the States.
